by the canal

A great, naturally air-conditioned bike-ride on the towpath between Lanaye and Kanne. This part of the Liège to Antwerp “Albert” Canal  (the Tranchée de Caster) was dynamited through a hill in 1930.  They could’ve gone the easy way round by Maastricht but didn’t want to cross the border! The chalky soil supports marvellous path-side wildflowers and the man-made gorge is 65 metres deep and thus in shade for most of the day.

then an excellent dinner at Brasserie le grand petit to round off the day.
