Sunday was spent in Antwerp. Although I had visited many times before to spend tipsy afternoons in Las Mañas (unspeakably good Spanish restaurant), and despite having wandered many happy hours on the quays by the River Schelde, it had never occurred to me that there were no bridges. How do all the people who live over there get over here? There is a secret (well its not on English wikipedia) pedestrian tunnel under the river! with wooden escalators! its like the London underground without the trains! The tunnel was built in 1933 and looks like all thats been done to it since is its been cleaned and lovingly polished.
I like the photos on this blog: so Belgium! The delicious white composition of the tunnel’s wooden escalators was found there.
